Learn how to make a beautiful pencil drawing of roses following this step by step tutorial.

Here I will try to show the importance of shading with hatching and cross hatching, and how this shading technique gets really powerful when combined with blending techniques.

For me every drawing is like a little challenge, an opportunity to learn and enjoy, if you have seen the other tutorials there is a consistency on the approach and the steps to follow, this really helps to learn how to draw.

However I Iike to have a kind of fresh approach for most of the drawings, this gives me more energy to focus and develop more creativity during the process. This tutorial will show you how to use the hatching technique and combine with blending at the later stages.

On this tutorial I will start to draw with the basic pencil sketch drawing for the outline and the edges of shadows, this is the best way to start and the solid approach to learn, focusing in one angle at a time.

Hatching and cross hatching to add volume

Cross hatching is an important technique to learn and quite simple, if you want more details I have covered this in the list of tutorials shown above. Whenever there is no need to blend the shapes then this technique is a must to create volume, I like to use at the initial stages and also at the end of more complex drawings to add some kind of texture and a more interesting line art.

This cross hatching is used below to shade the petals and in general every dark area. As we are using the white of the paper there is no toned background and we need to add a general tone to define volume step by step.

Blending hard edges with stumps

The blending stumps are great for the smaller shapes like thin edges, contour lines, etc. I like to focus on the lines so as to soften them, the further into the background, the softer. I would just leave some hard edges only in the foreground, this creates the illusion of distance and volume.

Use the chamois to blend larger areas, do not worry that the overall tone gets lighter afterwards, this always happens but the benefit is important: the whole edges, tone and look gets more uniform and works better as a whole. The cross hatching lines will blend nicely and many of them will be gone after this step.

Just after this blending stage is time to erase and get back the highlights and lighter areas, then shade again.

Do not forget to leave till the very end the darkest tone and the highlights. For the highlights use the hard edge of the eraser or the tip of the kneaded eraser. For the darkest tone it should be just a little area, only some small spots, use the 6B or softer pencil.

Pencil shading using cross hatching with a later stage of blending is a powerful technique to learn how to draw, practice this many times and you will see how the results get better and better.
